Story of this Build
The vision behind my Corolla is to preserve the timeless character of a classic Toyota while adding subtle touches inspired by the golden era of Japanese tuning.
Mine is a 1996 Toyota Corolla GLi, a GLi-based model that I acquired from an elderly couple in less than perfect condition.
What started as a car that needed a little restoration eventually became a personal project driven by my appreciation for classic Toyotas and the TRD performance culture.
Rather than claiming it as a genuine TRD model, I chose to build it around the TRD Stage 1-inspired theme, incorporating select TRD goodies that complement its original GLi identity.
These include a TRD gauge cluster, a two-point strut bar, and carbon-fiber dashboard panels that add a subtle motorsport feel to the interior. Every addition is carefully considered, keeping the balance between originality, functionality, and period correct aesthetics.
The goal isn’t to build something flashy or overdone, but a Corolla that captures the understated appeal of old-school Japanese tuning. From its naturally aspirated 4A-FE engine to the details inside the cabin, I want every modification to feel purposeful and true to the car’s character.
What makes it unmistakably mine is the story behind it.
A modest GLi given a new direction through patience, personal taste, and a genuine appreciation for the platform. The project is still ongoing, with plenty more to come, but the vision remains the same, to create a clean, tasteful, 1996 Corolla GLi with a TRD Stage 1 inspired personality, built my way, one detail at a time.
